The training and equipping of national believers have long been central to SGA’s work, which is why four Mission Schools are currently being run in Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania, and Poland. Each school provides rigorous theological training as it seeks to prepare new church leaders to faithfully handle God’s Word, for it is by its Spirit-empowered proclamation that the church of Jesus Christ grows.

For more than three decades, SGA has been privileged to serve alongside faithful believers in Moldova – men and women who know their people, their culture, and their language, and who have a deep burden to reach their own nation for Christ. Throughout this time, a simple truth has been confirmed: when believers are equipped and encouraged to minister within their own communities, the cause of the Gospel can advance in surprising ways.

Partnership has been crucial to the development and expansion of Gospel work throughout SGA’s ministry, particularly in the Central Asian region. Through fellowship with Trans World Radio, SGA has been able to extend its outreach into areas that were previously almost unevangelised, bringing the Gospel directly into homes and hearts where there is no access to a local church or the usual means of hearing God’s Word. The distribution of small radios – often described as our ‘little missionaries’ – has proved to be an effective way of overcoming many of the barriers faced by those who long to hear and be changed by the Gospel. But why is this project needed, and why is it so valuable in a region where opposition to Christian truth is often the norm?

One of the greatest highlights of SGA’s 75th anniversary year was the opportunity to reflect on those partnerships which have defined the Mission’s ministry over the last seven and a half decades. Just as the Apostle Paul poured out his heart in gratitude for the Philippians (Phil. 1:3-5), we too treasure the preciousness of Gospel partnership with those we are privileged to serve alongside. Yet, as Paul expresses his sincere thankfulness for those with whom he partners in ministry, the over-arching theme of his letter to the Philippians is that this partnership is totally centred on the Gospel. It is the Gospel that both generates partnership and drives it to missionary enterprise.

Most parents and grandparents have the joy from time to time of entering into the success of their children when they have excelled at sport, in music, art, or any of the other pastimes which occupy them. A cup, or shield, or medal is proudly presented, and celebrations follow. What may often be forgotten at such times are the countless hours of practice, rehearsal, and hard work which lie behind the award.

The name Mount Ararat immediately recalls ancient Bible history – the landing place of Noah’s ark and the dawn of a new chapter in human history. Ararat, the highest mountain bordering Armenia, stands in a nation that today is one of Asia’s most spiritually needy. Bordered by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey, Armenia has endured centuries of conflict, oppression, and massacre, leaving deep mistrust toward its neighbours. From 1915–1917, the Turks killed up to 1.5 million Armenians in a merciless genocide. Later wars with Azerbaijan (1988–1994 and 2020– 2023) ended in the ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh, where Armenians again suffered atrocities amounting to genocide.

This summer, lives have been transformed in Moldova as hundreds of children learned of the hope of Jesus Christ for the very first time at SGA-supported Christian camps. Remarkably, around 85% of these children came from non-Christian households, many of which may never have heard the Gospel if not for this vital ministry.

With a population of over 80 million, the republics of Central Asia are largely unevangelised. Evangelicals are estimated to make up around 0.1% in this largely Islamic or pagan part of the world. For more than thirty years, SGA has partnered with local organisations and churches to provide vital support to families in need and share with them the message of the Bible.

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God is to visit orphans and widows in their affliction. But as well as meeting their very real physical needs, this surely includes sharing with them the Gospel – the good news of Jesus Christ by which they are invited into the Kingdom of God where, robed in Christ’s righteousness, all that their Heavenly Father knows they need will forever be provided.
