State run leisure activities for young people are still not operating in Ukraine, but Christian camps continue to provide much needed opportunities for children to enjoy a time away from the horrifying consequences of war.
With three million young people having had to flee areas of active conflict, and a further 1.5 million experiencing significant mental health difficulties as a consequence, it comes as no surprise that camps run last year were over-subscribed.
Places had to be allocated according to need, something that SGA-supported missionary, Sergey Shalinsky, chose to do by giving priority to those who had lost friends and family to the conflict, and were in particular need of psychological healing.
Although saddened by having to turn some away, Sergey was nonetheless delighted to see many who were able to attend, come to faith in Christ.
This year, with the need for youth ministry every bit as urgent, SGA is again providing the funds necessary for yet more camps to take place. Even now our partners are busy planning for around 180 camps. They hope to build on last summer’s success and provide a safe place where boys and girls can find real hope in Jesus, and build supportive relationships that are so important in the context of the ongoing destructive hostilities.
Recently Pastor Igor Bandura expressed the gratitude of the churches in Ukraine for SGA’s ongoing support of this ministry which in dark times acts as ‘a beacon of light for many young hearts.’
Please Pray
Pray that the camps will again bear much fruit with many children and young people finding both lasting peace in Jesus and strength to live for Him.
