Scheduled Blackouts

SGA’s Communications Coordinator in Ukraine, Kateryna Nikonorova, sent the following report.

‘Early on December 13th Ukraine was under a rocket and drone attack, that the President called, “one of the largest strikes on our energy grid”. The numbers are quite shocking: 290 missiles and drones hitting energy and transport infrastructure across multiple regions: Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kirovohrad, Odesa, Kharkiv. The first two regions are at the country’s western border and suffered the most damage.

Our energy system has already suffered significant damage: state and regional energy operators introduced ‘scheduled’ blackouts, but the energy deficiency after today’s attack caused major emergency shutdowns. Public electric transport stopped operating in the most affected cities (the residents’ main commute) and people came down to metro stations for fear of the missiles, but thankfully no casualties have been reported so far.

Sadly, this has become a ‘traditional’ raid in the darkest time of the year with the temperatures dropping. The sound of chugging generators has become another sign of winter. But it is also a hopeful sound, as it sends the message, ‘there will be light…. We are grateful to those who help us let the buzzing of the working generator tell those around that here they can find light and hope.’

SGA‘s ‘Fuel for Generators’ project is helping to provide funds so that church generators can continue to operate during this winter. Thank you!
