Kherson – A City Under Siege

SGA sponsored missionary pastor, Sergey Sinni, leads an evangelical church in Kherson close to the front line of the war – so close in fact that Russian tanks can be seen on the other side of the River Dnieper on which it stands.

Recently he spoke of how the situation in his city is the most difficult it has ever been, with Russian missiles targeting schools, churches and hospitals on a daily basis whilst drones are deployed to kill civilians who venture out on to the streets.

Inevitably, many who live in Kherson are now relocating to safer, more remote locations. But the church remains – serving those who stay in the city, many of whom continue to be very open to the Gospel. Each week, Sergey preaches to a church that is packed with people, so much so that both the ground floor and the balcony are full of those who are eager to hear God’s Word and people are being saved.

As well as ministering to an ever-increasing number of widows, there is also a flourishing children’s work. As a result of being sent to church by his mother, one small child wanted to start giving thanks to God before each family meal. But because his Mum didn’t know how to pray, the boy had to teach her himself, which he did – beginning with the Lord’s Prayer!

Pastor Sergey remains in poor health but is content to know that his future lies in God’s hands.

It is his joy to serve the people of Kherson and so, for as long as he has strength, he will continue to share with them the Scriptures.

As he does so, he asks that we would join him in prayer – for both an end to the war and for revival in Ukraine.
