A Memorable Trip
By Megan Smylie
(Phoebe Rep. for West Midlands)
In May, four SGA Phoebe Reps had the opportunity to visit three Phoebe Ministries to witness first-hand some Gospel-centred women’s ministries in Romania and Hungary. It was a privilege for us to see the sacrificial love shown at Casa Filip, Emanuel Hospice and Mary’s House.
The dedication plaque at Casa Filip reminds residents and visitors of the reason for its existence – the love of Christ and His people. For seven years, that love has been powerfully displayed through the daily service of the staff God has called.
Cancer patients travelling from as far as Moldova or Ukraine arrive in Cluj-Napoca, Romania for treatment and are welcomed by Violeta Goron and her staff at Casa Filip where patients have access to spectacularly clean provision for the immuno-compromised. Guests are also provided with daily warm meals; common spaces to share and pray together, and opportunities to hear of Christ’s love in seminars and churches. Around 100 patients each month are cared for in the name of the Saviour who died to save them.
Three hours to the west, at Emanuel Hospice in Oradea, Marinela Rotariu and a team of 21 dedicated staff members minister the love of Christ by providing holistic palliative care. The highly skilled team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, physiotherapists and chaplains provide care for 60 adult patients, 40 children, and their families at any given time. How moving it was to stand by the bedside of a dying patient as Doctor Beni sang to her about the hope of the Gospel while also providing her with pain relief. A grateful mother testified that despite years of hospital visits with her son, it was not until paediatrician, Dr Daniela, arrived at her house that anyone had asked how she was. Since 1996, this Gospel-centered attention to body and soul has embodied the care of Emanuel Hospice and pointed patients to the resurrection hope of Christ. Their patients call them “angels without wings.”
In Hungary, it was a joy to see God’s faithfulness to three generations of the Ficsor family in their Gospel service to the needy through the Good News Foundation and Mary’s House. It was a delight to meet Noemi – one of the vulnerable mothers residing at Mary’s House with her young son. Her life has been transformed by the Gospel, and the love and care she has received. A creation museum, Roma ministry, and aid distribution programme are also bearing fruit for the Kingdom.
Each of these ministries is a testimony to the faithful provision and sustaining grace of Christ for His people. They also testify to His love for the broken and hurting.
Please join SGA as we give thanks and pray for these brothers and sisters. In particular, pray for provision of meals support for Casa Filip, for funding for the new residential clinic and additional staff for Hospice Emanuel, as well as for continued resources for the varied ministries of the Good News Foundation.
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Cor 13:13)
