New beginnings in Bazna

On a dry December Sunday morning, the village of Bazna, nestled in the picturesque rolling hills of Sibiu County, Romania, became a focal point for hope and renewal. Historically known for its fortified church and mineral springs, Bazna is home to around 6,000 inhabitants. On this particular Sunday the air was filled with a palpable sense of thanksgiving as the community gathered for the reopening of the Baptist Evangelical Church.

Established in 2001, the church had faced ongoing challenges and dwindled to just a few members, making the building impractical to use. Many viewed this decline as a setback in the community’s spiritual life and felt compelled to reverse it. Among them was Jonatan Moldovan, a missionary pastor supported by SGA, who, together with colleagues from Betel Church in Medias, set out to restore the building—praying to see God rekindle the fading flame of faith in Bazna.

The opening service was a significant milestone, marking the culmination of hard work and dedication on the part of many involved in the renovation process. The church building, once in disrepair, has been thoughtfully refurbished. Local dignitaries, including the deputy mayor and the principal of the primary school where Jonatan’s wife, Diana, teaches, joined in the celebration – a testament to the communal value placed on this project.

As the service commenced local residents filled the recently restored church to overflowing. Prior to the official reopening Jonatan had already convened worship services to test the functionality of heating and sound systems, among other logistical concerns. During these preliminary gatherings he was heartened to see 40 individuals attending. Jonatan’s fervent prayer is that this number not only remains stable but grows as the community embraces this renewed spiritual initiative.

Looking ahead, Jonatan has ambitious plans to expand the church’s outreach in Bazna. Next to the main building is another structure with strong potential to become a youth centre – addressing the clear lack of activities for young people and creating a vital hub for the next generation. The church has also developed a growing children’s ministry, strengthened by Diana’s connections through her work at the local primary school, helping build meaningful relationships with families.

As the celebration drew to a close, the atmosphere was filled with hope and anticipation. The church’s reopening marks a new beginning, yet all involved know much work remains. Their aim is not simply to establish another place of worship, but to nurture a true sense of belonging among villagers who have not yet encountered Christ’s love and grace – a vision of restoration, hope, and spiritual renewal for those still to experience the transforming power of faith.

As we reflect on these developments, let us continue to pray for and support the believers in Bazna. May they be united in purpose, boldly reaching their neighbouring villages and drawing many into the life of the church. Together, let us stand firm in faith, confident that nothing is impossible for God, and remain prayerfully engaged as His plan unfolds.
