the inside story

In the service of Christ

Serbia is a strongly Orthodox country, where evangelical Christians make up only 0.3% of the population.
The Bread of Life organization was set up to provide humanitarian and social care, with the aim of providing Gospel opportunities and sharing the love of Christ with those in need.

SGA has partnered with BoL for over twenty-five years. The team there is involved in many varied ministries – care of the elderly, children, Roma communities, drug addicts, and more recently dementia sufferers.  So valued is this work that even the Government authorities recognise its importance in Serbian society.

The team at BoL, ministers to people, showing Christ’s love in practical ways.  By caring for those in need they reach other family members too and take every opportunity to share the Gospel.  SGA sends finance to support the many widows and other elderly people needing care.  One lady recently wrote Now I have a better diet; if there were no help, I wouldn’t be able to buy these groceries.  I wouldn’t be able to buy wood for heating, my diet would be poor, I would feel abandoned”.

Amela is a teaching assistant in Surčin, Belgrade. She is from a Muslim background.

She first became involved with BoL when their educational ministries to help Roma children began in 2005, being one of the first children to join the group.

Her grandfather was then a coordinator for the needs of the Roma community. He was very grateful to Bread of Life. Without their assistance he would not have been able to apply for help in obtaining financial resources for the construction of the road, the introduction of street lighting, the construction of the Roma centre, nor the construction of a children’s playground in the Roma settlement. BoL is very thankful to God for the way that Amela has developed from childhood into motherhood. She has embraced BoL’s vision about the importance of education and the rich potential of a life of hard, honest work. Eighty-six other Roma children come to the BoL facility in Surčin and are taught in the context of Christian love.

It is the deep desire of Bread of Life team to see Amela and the Roma settlement in Surčin respond to the love of Christ and the practical Christianity shown to them.
