The Next Generation

From the earliest days of its ministry, SGA has put the evangelism and spiritual nurture of children and young people at the top of its priorities.
There is an recurring theme in in Old Testament times. It is the necessity of teaching and instructing the next generation, of passing on God’s Word to the children and bringing them up in the knowledge and fear of God. Scripture consistently records God’s command to teach the next generations. There is a focus of this injunction in the book of Deuteronomy where, within a few chapters commands are given by God to make known to children and grandchildren the law of God and His requirements as revealed to them (4:9). This was a solemn duty to be carried out diligently, and to be an ongoing part of their daily lives and their family life (6:6,7; cf.11:19)

Jesus displayed that deep concern for the spiritual welfare of children (Matt.19:13) correcting His disciples and encouraging parents to bring their little ones to Him. A sombre warning falls from Jesus’ lips a little later that if someone caused one of the little ones who believe in Him to sin, it would be better if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea (Matt.18:16).

In letters to the churches the apostle Paul includes within his instructions and exhortations, the responsibility of parents to attend to the spiritual welfare of their little ones – a ‘mission field’ which they dare not forget. What a serious thing it is to neglect or damage the spiritual life of children!

From the earliest days of its ministry, SGA has put the evangelism and spiritual nurture of children and young people at the top of its priorities. Early youth camps in Poland by God’s grace, produced some of today’s outstanding leaders in evangelical life there. Recognizing the vast potential for spiritual blessing and growth, SGA has over many years supported the development of camp programmes in Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova and other lands, and thousands of young people have been taught the Gospel and the Scriptures.

The more recent establishment and development of camp outreach in Central Asia has been accompanied by the building of Hope Centres, for ministry to vulnerable women and children. This has been a fruitful and blessed step, one which is now being developed in Mongolia!

Pastors and evangelists are discovering that wisely planned and well-organized children’s activities are not only effective in reaching the young people themselves, but helpful in breaking down barriers in communities previously untouched by the Gospel. Young hearts are not hardened and resistant to the Gospel of the love of Christ. In these early years, it is crucial that seed is sown in good soil, in receptive hearts and minds, in the confidence that by the power of God a great harvest will ensue.

It is clear then, why SGA (UK) keeps the support of camps and camp ministry constantly in focus for financial, practical and prayer support. Plans are being finalized for another summer of camp outreach across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Pray that God’s richest blessing will be upon these efforts to win the young for Christ.
